The site is in the Donghu scenic and historical area in which all the buildings should work together to form a monolithic image of tradition. As a result, the building following the Chinese traditional principle of design would be recommended.
The building is a pavilion of paper cut art which is also a kind of Chinese traditional art. What can we inherit from traditional art and make something new?
Chinese characters are pictographs. “宀” and “人” represent two kinds of roofs. The two characters above tell that Chinese traditional architecture has taken two separate paths. The roofs of Palace architecture were made linear to manifest power. However, in non-governmental landscape architecture, which is for temporary rest, the roofs were much freer. A wing-like big roof is the essential spirit of Chinese traditional landscape architecture. In this design, the traditional essence is represented by modern methods.
The concept of this design comes from the paper-cut flower, a kind of advanced paper-cut art that turns the planar paper into a three-dimensional flower. In this design, the entire site is treated as a piece of paper. The building and the landscape are cut and pulled up from the ground, as a literal interpretation of “landscape architecture”.
In this design, the Chinese traditional landscape architecture is analyzed and paraphrased in a modern way with the same logic. The flying spirit of traditional landscape architecture eaves is inherited and it evokes the emotional resonance of tradition.
